1970 Distributor Cap

A distributor cap is an insulated lid or cover that contains a central terminal, sometimes called as a coil terminal, with a series of spark plug terminals for each cylinder arranged in a circular pattern around the central terminal. The high voltage from the coil is distributed by the rotor. As the rotor rotates and passes along a small gap between the rotor and the spark plug terminal, the high voltage pulse arcs from the coil then goes down the spark plug wire to the spark plug on the correct cylinder. Distributor cap also protects the distributor from dirt and moisture. A damaged distributor cap may cause short circuit that might start a fire.
