A shock absorber, also called as damper, is an oil-filled device in the suspension system that controls the movement of the spring and the suspension. It reduces the rate of movement of the suspension while the vehicle is at motion. The shock absorber provides resistance as the suspension moves, which in turn reduces the rate of bounce while driving on bumpy roads, minimizes roll or sway during high speed turning, and decreases the effect of brake dive or acceleration squat. A malfunctioning shock absorber will unbalance the damping capability of the suspension system that may lead to uncomfortable driving experience or even lead to accidents during high speed driving.
