An oxygen sensor is a device in the emission control system that measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust pipe and then sends the information to the electronic control module. The information provided by the oxygen sensor is then used to determine the amount of oxygen needed to perform efficient combustion. Less oxygen will result to fuel left over after the combustion while too much oxygen supply will cause the fuel-oxygen mixture to produce greater amounts of nitrogen-oxide pollutants. Excess air is supplied in the mixture than needed may even cause damage to the engine.
