An engine harmonic balancer, also known as crank pulley damper or vibration damper, is a type of pulley that has a weight ring wherein the outer ring absorbs and cancels out excessive engine crankshaft vibrations, preventing the crankshaft to crack or break. It is connected to the front end of the engine crankshaft and composed of two elements, the mass and the dissipating element. A damaged harmonic balancer due to applied stress, strain, and chemical exposure may cause the unit to break or separate, resulting in crankshaft failure.
