A clutch release bearing, also called as throw-out bearing, is a device in the clutch that pushes the diaphragm spring which causes the clutch plate to disengage from the flywheel. When the clutch pedal is depressed, the clutch cable or a hydraulic piston pushes on the release fork that drives the clutch release bearing towards the center of the diaphragm spring. As the diaphragm spring is pushed, a series of studs near the outside of the spring causes the spring to bend and pull the pressured plate backwards, which in turn releases the clutch clutch from the engine. A broken clutch fork will prevent the throw-out bearing from pushing the diaphragm spring, which in turn keeps the clutch in contact with the engine that prevents the driver from changing gears.
