A PCV valve, abbreviation for positive crankcase ventilation system valve, is the device used to reroute the crankcase blowby back to the engine where it will be reburned. A crankcase blowby is the mixture of air and fuel that leaks past the piston rings that builds up and causes formation of engine sludge and results in engine power loss. The PCV valve redirects the blowby to the intake manifold which is then sent back to the engine where it is reburned, which in turn improves fuel efficiency and reduces emission pollution. A damaged PCV valve will allow blowby to escape to the crankcase which causes fumes and sludge formation that will result in loss of engine power.
