A manifold absolute pressure sensor or MAP sensor is a type of sensor that monitors the engine's manifold pressure and conveys the information to the electronic control unit or the ECU. The information supplied by the MAP sensor is then used to determine engine loads such as the rate of air mass flow, air density, and fuel flow and to adjust spark timing. Heavy load signal from the MAP sensor makes rich fuel mixture that produces more power and delayed spark timing while light load signal creates detonation due to extreme spark advance and lean fuel mixture. A faulty MAP sensor sends wrong signal to the ECU which may result to poor fuel efficiency and reduced engine performance.
