Fel-Pro Gaskets – Why Fel-Pro Is Better

Any time two pieces of metal that fluids or air flow through meet there is potential for leaks.  A gasket is placed between these two pieces of metal before they are fastened together, which then fills in the gaps and prevents leaks.  It’s a simple concept, but a lot of chemical and mechanical engineering has gone into gasket design, as well as designing the material they are made out of, to ensure gaskets can hold up to the demands of modern engines, which are very different than they used to be.  Of course, the older a vehicle is the greater the need for specialized gasket technologies, since as an engine ages the potential for leaks is much greater. Fel-Pro gaskets have the manufacturing capabilities and resources of Federal-Mogul behind them, inclu...

K&N Performance Air Filters – The Brand that Battles Dealerships for their Customers

K&N Air Filters is an awesome company for their commitment to quality and their passion for providing the best air filters out there.   That said, we think there is a lesser-known reason K&N rocks – not related to product performance, but to the confidence they display in their own warranty, and in their pledge to protect customers from swindling dealerships that try to falsely void factory warranties.    The K&N Consumer Protection Pledge   For K&N CEO, Steven Rogers, it isn’t enough that you just buy a high performance K&N air filter, he wants to be sure that your K&N products can be installed without vo...

Fuel Economy and Performance? It Can Be Done

Computer chip programmers might just be the best power-per-dollar investment for your car or truck. CPU programmers boost power and fuel efficiency using a variety of low and higher octane fuel levels. But the extent of CPU programmers don't end there. Some even recalibrate your speedometer when using larger diameter tires. Or scan the engine for trouble codes. Chip programmers work by altering factory fuel/ignition timing tables in the Electronic Control Module (CPU). A lot of today's chip programmers also provide you with the ability to switch to different performance modes, such as: improved torque more horsepower improved fuel effici...

The Tesla Roadster – Very Green and Extremely Mean!

Very green in that it is a totally electric car that can go 244 miles on a single charge and Extremely Mean because it can go from 0 to 60 in about 3.9 seconds!  The Tesla Roadster is made by Tesla Motors in California and was first available in 2008.  It is an engineering marvel that looks very similar to a Lotus Elise and in fact shares some parts with that car.  Lotus provided advice to Tesla on designing and developing a vehicle, as well as producing partly assembled vehicles.  The Tesla Roadster is the first all-electric vehicle in serial production to be made in the United States that is capable of running on the highway.  This is not the only first for this uniquely engineered car; there are several, actually:  The first to use lithium-ion battery...

KYB – ESC (Electronic Stability Control), To Reduce Crashes and Potentially Save Lives

Electronic Stability Control (ESC), is an electronic system on your vehicle that helps stop spin-outs and roll-overs in extreme maneuvering situations, which can prevent crashes and potentially save lives. Most vehicle crashes that happen as a result of loss of control of the vehicle are due to the vehicle being driven beyond its traction limits such as in over or under-steer situations or driving too fast for conditions.  ESC monitors these conditions and will reduce engine speed and apply one of the individual wheel brakes when the vehicle is rolling or leaning too far, or when the tires are beginning to lose traction, in order to bring the vehicle back under control.  Beginning in 2005, the US government mandated that a certain percentage of new vehicles were required to...

KYB – What Is The Difference Between GR-2 And Excel-G?

Other than color, that is.  And the name.  Actually, nothing.  The color and name have changed, but the product itself is actually exactly the same.  The silver color GR-2 is changing to the black Excel-G.  The reason for the change is KYB’s switch to a world-wide inventory, which should improve product availability.  Only the United States and Canada utilize this shock as the GR-2 in a silver color.  The rest of the world refers to it as the Excel-G, which is black in color.  For consistency, KYB is bringing the US and Canada part into compliance with the part name and color the rest of the world uses. Another benefit of changing to the black color Excel-G is that the black color usually matches the OEM part your vehicle came ...

EBC Brakes - Solving Brake Vibration Permanently

Often the vibration sometimes experienced when braking is referred to as being caused by bent or warped rotors, but this is in fact an incorrect term.  EBC Brakes has never seen a warped brake disc or rotor due to use.  Brake rotors are made from cast iron, a very tough and durable material, and there is a reason for that – they can be run to red heat and cooled time after time without distorting.  Brake rotors simply do not warp.  This is why cast iron is used for brake rotors the world over – there has never been another material that can beat it and very likely never will be.  What EBC has commonly seen happen is brake vibration after 3000-6000 miles that is actually caused by run out (unevenness of the brake rotor surface), at install, which c...

My not so great experience with Honda. Why the dealer isn't the best place to go for auto parts and repair!

Over the years. I have had many great and 'not so great' experiences with my car.  I have a 2005 Honda Civic, which I love deeply, but what I don't love is the repair aspect of my car... namely getting ripped off for the repair costs. My latest 'not so great ' experience was when I went to the Honda Dealer to get one of my visors replaced.  For some reason (I am guessing the intense Florida heat) my visors were coming apart at the seams. I expected that would be the only thing to get replaced, but unfortunately I was wrong.  I was told that I needed two tires replaced, plus I needed them rotated and alligned.  I wanted to see how much everything would cost, so I agreed to wait for the 45 min time period.  After TWO hours I was t...

Your car takes a beating during summer and now that the season is winding down, it's time that you start thinking about giving your car a little post-summer TLC. Any hotter and the metal can actually melt and fuse. That, needless to say, is not good. To keep your engine running at an optimal temperature, flush your radiator before and after summer, and keep it filled with a good mixture of coolant. Windshield Wipe...

Brembo – 50 Years of Brake Innovation

Over the last half century Brembo has made a prestigious name for themselves in the world of brakes.  They began making brake discs for cars in 1964 and then brake systems for motorcycles in 1972.  In 1975 Brembo entered Formula 1 racing, supplying its own braking systems for Ferrari GP cars.  As Brembo advanced through that 50 years they utilized forward-thinking technology and constantly tested new materials and manufacturing processes, to become the recognized front-runner in the braking system market. In 1995 Brembo began being listed ...
