Some interesting news out of Bosch, that they and Daimler are teaming up for a joint venture to produce electric motors (also known as traction motors). Daimler AG and Robert Bosch GmbH both signed agreements to form a 50:50 joint venture for producing electric motors. A new company called EM-motive GmbH will be set up to design, manufacture and market cutting-edge electric motors for electric vehicles. The new company will be based in Hildesheim, close to both parent companies in the Stuttgart area. Production of the new electric motor is scheduled to begin in 2012. The new company will place extreme importance on high quality and innovation in developing this new electric motor, as electric vehicles will continue to be important and a growing automotive industry in the future.
The intent behind a Bosch/Daimler joint venture is a combining of strengths and expertise, to speed up the process of developing high quality electric motors for electric vehicles with battery, fuel cell or range extender. These new electric motors will begin appearing in Mercedes-Benz and smart brand vehicles beginning in early 2012.
The most innovative feature of the new electric motors that will be manufactured by the joint venture is a modular design, which allows them to be installed in many different completely electric vehicles. The joint venture will provide electric motors for electric vehicles to its parent companies and Bosch will handle sales to third parties. Plans are to produce more than one million electric motors by 2020.
Both Bosch and Daimler are applying their expertise to engineering for the future with electric motors!
