Movies for The Car Enthusiast

Just like anything else produced in Hollywood, the automotive industry is depicted as almost a fantasy—watching the fastest, hottest cars doing nearly impossible things. Following up with Tuesday’s post about Cars Representing Movies, there are plenty of classic and recent movies that feature cars with an actual decent storyline (The Fast and The Furious franchise is still up for debate).

Movies like 1971’s “Le Mans” or the 1966 “Grand Prix” are cinematic nostalgia any car enthusiast should experience. Both movies focus on F1 racing and are interspersed with actual racing footage giving viewers their first taste of high speed adventure. These movies centered on the sport of racing and the culture that is just as high speed today.

Car movie highlights from the past decade include “Drive”, “Death Proof”, and “Cars” (yes, that movie where cars talk). Aside from overly stylish vehicles, what’s interesting about these movies is that in one way or another, they’re all throwbacks to classic car movies. ‘Cars’ for example has plenty of callbacks to movies like Le Mans and Grand Prix while Quentin Tarantino was able to resurrect muscle0-car adoration in “Death Proof”.
