A decade of flourish and economic boom, the 1990’s brought us the widespread proliferation of the Internet, teenybopper pop, White House scandals and more. While not a milestone decade for new automobiles (unlike its preceding years which produced vehicles epitomizing its era), the 90’s did provide the steppingstones for today’s modern vehicles.
Take the Ford Explorer introduced in 1990, essentially replacing station wagons soccer moms would drive. The Explorer and its shift-on-the-fly 4-wheel drive put this SUV into the mainstream. Both families and adventurers took to the SUV fast and is still popular today.
One year later, the Acura NSX was introduced and quickly became the everyman’s Ferrari. A super car that many used as their daily driver, this was Honda’s vehicle to introduce their VTEC system.
Shifting over to the later half of the 90’s we had Volkswagen’s come back in the form of the New Beetle introduced in 1997. Capturing the minimal and hippie like vibe of the original met with modern colors and features made for popular vehicle.
For big spenders, it was the 1998 Porsche 911 that defined the last couple years of the decade. With a sleek new body, the 911 was just the beginning of style and class.
