The Airaid Filter Company began in 1997 designing and producing air intake systems for light trucks and SUVs, using the cotton-gauze filter technology that was popular at that time. The original AIRAID Intake System brought together an open-element filter with an intake tube, originating an air intake kit that significantly improved air flow and performance while producing more horsepower and torque, but was still simple to install. The sales of AIRAID almost tripled in the first year of manufacturing, which led AIRAID's founders to develop a new source of filters. AIRAID believed they could make a higher-quality filter by incorporating new technology available, together with the latest innovations in materials. The AIRAID filter company was started in November 2002.

High-quality Airaid filters are made up of several layers of cotton-gauze, plus one layer of synthetic fiber material in between either stainless steel or aluminum mesh, depending on the specific vehicle it's made for. The exterior case of the filter is made from hand-poured urethane, which provides long-lasting high performance. This filter casing also holds up well when exposed to the heat conditions under the hood and won't shrink or crack.

Airaid has come to be recognized as the leader in air management for both gasoline and diesel engines over the years.
