ABOUT CLOYES
Cloyes Gear and Products, Inc. Company Overview

Cloyes Gear and Products, Inc. is a Tier 1 OEM supplier to General Motors, Daimler-Chrysler, Ford and Nissan, so they are in a good position to take advantage of the new direction the industry is moving in, towards moving the design, testing and validation of systems to the supplier. Cloyes is the biggest timing gear and sprocket OEM manufacturer and they have earned this distinction by adhering to strict quality, engineering and manufacturing guidelines, as well as providing stellar customer service. Cloyes' Aftermarket Division is foremost in the industry, providing the widest variety of replacement timing drive systems and parts available. In addition, Cloyes is also a major player in the high performance world.

Cloyes Gear and Products, Inc. Company History

Cloyes started in the early 1920s in Cleveland, Ohio when Raymond Cloyes was making a small number of replacement fiber and aluminum timing gears for trucks and automobiles by hand. He sold them out of a market basket to replacement parts jobbers in Cleveland. Cloyes was able to increase his customers to include making a few gears for OEM automotive companies, as well as industrial and government applications. This was the history of Cloyes Gear Works, which is now known as Cloyes Gear and Products, Inc. The company was bought by Harry D. Myers of Cleveland in 1954, who followed the growth of the automotive market and also aggressively expanded the sales and distribution. In 1955 the Cloyes line was sold through only 22 warehouse distributors, but by 1961 there were 116 warehouse distributors and 8,000 jobbers selling the line. In the early 1960s Cloyes built a new manufacturing facility in Paris, Arkansas and Cloyes' aftermarket sales rapidly increased over the late 1960s and early 1970s. Cloyes was the first company to sell replacement timing components to fit almost any product with an internal combustion engine. Currently Cloyes sells timing components under not only the Cloyes name, but a few others. They are the oldest and largest company selling aftermarket timing components. Cloyes is also a respected name in the race-engine parts world. In 1970 Cloyes completely changed the race industry with the design of the True Roller Timing system. In the late 1970s Cloyes opened a sales office in Detroit and they were soon providing parts to General Motors, Ford and Chrysler. Cloyes began to buy powdered metal (PM) sprockets from Rush Metals in Billings, Oklahoma and purchased Rush Metals in 1980. Rush still manufactures both OEM and aftermarket automotive parts, as well as industrial parts. In 1987 Cloyes built a plant in Subiaco, Arkansas to handle the increased business for high-volume machined sprockets. This plant was expanded in 1990 to accommodate increasing demand for PM. In 1996 Cloyes purchased RFR Technologies, a Canadian company that manufactures inverted tooth timing chain and transmission drive chains. In 1998 a new distribution facility was opened in Ft. Smith, Arkansas to serve their Aftermarket customers. In 2002 Cloyes Europe GmbH was formed in partnership with Sumitomo Corporation of Japan, leading to the building of a manufacturing plant in Zittau, Germany to make engine and transmission components for the European automotive market. Also in 2002 Cloyes acquired the timing component business assets of Dynagear, Inc., its biggest aftermarket competition. In May 2004 Cloyes Dynagear Mexicana was started, which allowed Cloyes to expand aftermarket distribution in Central and South America.
