In 1987 Dynomax Performance Exhaust began as a division of Walker Exhaust Systems, which is owned by Tenneco. Tenneco's Walker Exhaust Division at that time desired to venture into the domestic auto market with some new exhaust designs. Their original intent was to combine their existing sound technology with a European design, utilizing a new product developed by Owens Corning, an extremely high temperature extruded fiberglass fiber. At that time Tennoco was not really interested in the aftermarket. They had designed their exhaust system and muffler, tuned for certain domestic models, for the Big Three car manufacturers. Walker invented a slotted turbo muffler, internally wound with 70-mile long fiber in a patented process to manufacture this long-lived quiet muffler. These mufflers were advertised as the Walker Quiet-Flow. Unfortunately, the Big Three auto makers were not interested. Tenneco ultimately sold this design to Saab and most Saabs built this century utilize these mufflers. Walker had invested a large amount of research and development into this muffler and so decided to create the Dynomax division, which would be focused on the performance aftermarket, applying all that had been learned from Walker's research and development while making changes to increase flow and lower the frequency response. That sound foundation of research is obvious in the sound of almost all Dynomax mufflers and the Dynomax Super Turbo is directly descended from the original Walker Quiet-flow.
