Read MoreThe Federal-Mogul Corporation was started in 1899 by J. Howard Muzzy and Edward F. Lyon as the Muzzy-Lyon Company. They initially sold mill supplies and rubber goods, but early on they set up an early subsidiary called the Mogul Metal Company which basically completely changed the bearing industry. In 1901 the Mogul Metal Company originated a new Babbitt metal called Mogul and it was sold under the Duro and Mogul brand names. In 1924 the company merged with Federal-Bearings and Bushing, who produced engine bearings and bushings, and became Federal-Mogul Corporation. In 1932 Federal-Mogul designed a new alloy called C-100, which was the first new material for bearings since the discovery of Babbitt metal. Federal-Mogul's research staff refined the C-100 in 1934 and released the new C-50 alloy. These innovations changed bearing manufacture and durability dramatically. In 1955 the company merged with the Bower Roller Bearing Company and became Federal-Mogul-Bower Bearings, Inc. In the early 1960's Federal-Mogul-Bower went international and began operations in Switzerland and Antwerp, Belgium. In 1965 the company merged with Sterling Aluminum Products and returned its name to Federal-Mogul Corporation. In 1966 Federal-Mogul moved its corporate headquarters from downtown Detroit to Southfield, Michigan. In 1999 Federal-Mogul celebrated its 100th anniversary and although they have had to overcome tough times, they are looking forward to the next 100 years!
