Read MoreWalker is one of the core brands of Tenneco and is the most prolific manufacturer of automotive exhaust systems for the replacement and OE markets worldwide. Walker started in 1888 in Racine, Wisconsin as the Economy Spring Company. In 1908 William A. Walker and his twin sons, Willard and Warren, took over the company and ran a "Walker Operation." Willard Walker began a new venture with John Dwight that he called 'tire savers' in 1912. Tire savers were jacks that lifted a car off the ground to take the load off fragile tires while stored for the winter. In 1916 a new manufacturing facility was built in Racine for the new business and the name of the company officially was changed to Walker Manufacturing Company. The jack business grew throughout the 1920s and in 1929 Walker bought Ajax Auto Parts Company and immediately became a premier jack manufacturer for the country. In 1932 Walker patented the louvered tube muffler, which confirmed their position as a leader in this industry. By 1941 Walker had designed the first stainless steel muffler. In 1953 Walker originated the first aluminized steel muffler and sound control capability which could accommodate various conditions in vehicles. In 1962 Walker designed crankcase devices which were the first ancestors of the catalytic converter and in 1963 Walker invented a catalytic reactor system for use in cars. In 1967 Walker opened a research facility in Grass Lake, Michigan for testing acoustics and exhaust systems. In 1969 Walker was purchased by Tenneco. Walker continued to grow over the years and Tenneco acquired several other companies including Products for Power (PFP) and Perfection, and Performance Industries, whose products include Cyclone and Blackjack header products and Thrush mufflers. Tenneco Automotive began to be traded as an independent company on November 5, 1999, following its strategic separation from Tenneco's packaging business now called Pactiv.
