Brembo was the first company to manufacture Italian brake discs for the aftermarket. Brembo started in 1961 as a small garage close to Bergamo and was run by the current President's father, Emilio Bombassei. Before that time brake discs had been imported from Great Britain. The brake discs were followed by other braking system components as time went on. Brembo's skill, specialization and the quality of their products and services started getting attention on an international level and they became a leader in Europe's brake disc aftermarket. In 1972 Brembo's brake technology began to be applied to motorcycles, starting with Moto Guzzi and Brembo also became a leader in motorcycle braking systems. In the 1980's Brembo innovated brake calipers for cars in aluminum and this technology was later adopted by Porsche, Mercedes, Lancia, BMW, Nissan and Chrysler. In the 1990s Brembo continued to grow and by 1995 was quoted in the Milan Stock Exchange. Through 2000 and beyond Brembo has continued to expand through acquisitions and today has even started producing passive sAFEty devices due to the acquisition of Sabelt, a leader in production of seat belts for both racing cars and child sAFEty.
