The company SATURNUS was founded in 1921; they made packaging goods and sheet metal products for the chemical and food industries. The company started to manufacture lighting products for the automotive industry in 1948 and started to manufacture headlamps and rear lamps for European car companies such as Renault, Simca, Citroen, Peugeot and Volkswagen in the 1960's. SATURNUS wanted to diversity their production capabilities and in 1992 they split into four independent companies. One of these four companies was called Saturnus Avtooprema d.d. and this company continued to manufacture lighting equipment for the automotive industry. In 1997 Saturnus Avtooprema d.d. finished a re-privatization procedure, according to Slovenian state law. With this legal procedure Hella KG became majority owner of the company. Hella KG became the 100% owner in June 2004. At that time the company was named Hella KGaA Hueck & Co. Hella has enjoyed great success over the years designing and manufacturing lighting equipment. There are currently more than 25,000 employees working in 70 manufacturing facilities, production subsidiaries and joint ventures all over the world. More than 3,500 engineers and technicians work in research and development throughout the company. Of Hella's business, 90% of it is export business. Due to their innovative approach to the design and manufacture of their products and their overall dedication to high quality, Hella has become a name known worldwide in the automotive industry.
