Pertronix was started in 1962 by Lavar Holman, originally called Per-Lux, and primarily making driving and fog lights for big trucks. The Ignitor originated in the early 1970s, when an engineer had an idea for an electronic ignition system to use instead of the points and condenser in distributors. Per-Lux patented and began making systems primarily aimed at the lift truck and industrial engine markets. The Ignitor became popular with fleet managers for everything from delivery trucks and school buses to generator/industrial engines as they realized the improvements in reliability and reduced maintenance costs. Not many automotive versions of The Ignitor were available at first, but automotive devotees also began using it for the improved performance it offered. Based on The Ignitor technology, complete electronic distributors were innovated in 1985 for a selection of industrial and agricultural engines. Things began changing at Per-Lux in 1990, when they sold their lighting division and the management team led by Tom Reh, the company's Chief Financial Officer, acquired the ignition division. In 1991 the company name was officially changed to Pertronix, confirming the company's total dedication to the ignition business. Pertronix has changed their focus to their automotive products over the last few years because of the rapid growth of the automotive performance industry and has added 80 versions during that time. By 1997 Pertronix needed to expand production because of rapid growth, as well as the innovation of Flame-Thrower coils and spark plugs, and they moved to a brand new 22,000 square foot custom manufacturing facility. Pertronix also grew through acquisitions and in August 2000 they completed the acquisition of Ermie Immerso Enterprises, a 30-year-old exhaust products manufacturer, and in 2005 Doug's Headers was added to Pertronix. The success and growth continued and Ignitor kit sales exceeded 3,000,000 units by the end of 2006. Today Pertronix boasts a comprehensive line of performance tune up accessories including modules, coils, caps and rotors, in addition to their newest product line addition, Flame-Thrower HEI distributors. The Flame-Thrower HEI distributors are totally new (not remanufactured), with unique electronic components that deliver superior performance over all other HEI units available currently. Pertronix continues to deliver the performance their customers need for everything from classic cars to forklift trucks.
