A diverter valve is a device that supplies cold air to the fuel mixture that enters the intake manifold to increase engine power and efficiency during deceleration. It is used to prevent compression surge that occurs when the throttle is lifted in a vehicle with an unvented turbocharged engine. A compression surge occurs when the compressor wheel is slowed down by the pressure wave caused by the high pressure air trapped by the throttle in the intake system. It stresses the turbo which results in a turbo lag when the vehicle accelerates immediately after the surge. A diverter valve releases the pressure in the intake system to the atmosphere during deceleration which produces a hissing sound.
