An engine coolant temperature sensor or ECT sensor measures the temperature of the engine coolant and then sends the information to the electronic control module. The information sent is then used by the module to determine the fuel mixture needed and adjust the timing of the spark. A faulty engine coolant temperature sensor will send inaccurate readings to the ECM, which in turn may result in engine hesitation or overheating.
