A fuel pump relay is an electrical device that activates the fuel pump when cranking the engine and when the engine is running. It is also used when shutting the engine off. The coil inside the relay is energized when the ignition key is turned forward, which in turn powers up the fuel pump. A faulty fuel pump relay will prevent the fuel pump from supplying fuel to the engine and the engine will not start.
