The George Stant Machine Works was founded in 1898 in Connersville, Indiana and they soon earned a reputation for quality engine repair in the infant automotive industry. However, it was actually George Stant's ingenious idea for automating the manufacture of piano tuning pins and his competence with copper, nickel and silver plating that really developed his company's reputation. The Stant Machine Company, Inc. began designing and building auto parts after World War I, including the two-piece radiator cap. This was an ingenious Stant idea for insuring proper alignment of the radiator ornaments and the external Moto-Meter temperature gauge that were common in the early 1900s. By the 1930s Stant had become the premier manufacturer of hood ornaments. In 1932 George's son, Kyle, was the originator of the locking gas cap. They were originally sold to local service stations, but later became some of the first parts sold through the growing automotive replacement market. Currently Stant is the premier producer of automotive fuel, radiator and oil filler caps, on-board refueling vapor recovery (ORVR) valves and pressure, vacuum and fuel system testers. Stant Manufacturing was acquired by Tomkins plc in 1997.
