The distributor transfers electricity to the spark plugs -- the mechanism in the ignition system that distributes the high voltage from the coil. It is designed to supply and break the flow of electricity to the appropriate cylinder at a correct timing. As high voltage passes to the central terminal of the distributor, it will then pass down the rotor that rotates and arcs the resultant high voltage through a small gap to each successive terminal around the distributor cap. The high voltage pulse will then travel to the spark plug wires and to the spark plug to produce a spark needed for combustion to take place. A faulty distributor will fail to supply the high voltage needed by the spark plugs that may prevent combustion to begin. Malfunctioning distributor may also send high voltage pulses at the wrong time which will result in poor engine performance. The cap and the rotor commonly require replacing as these become decayed due to a constant loop of electricity.
